Blogroll your Faves

One of the features that was requested in the early days of Blotanical was a widget to handle member's blogrolls. It made sense because most members only faved the blogs that they would read or point others to anyway.

Running blogs for nearly three years now, I know what a strain it can be to keep your blogroll up to date. You make some new friends and you want to promote them in your sidebar but then it means getting messy with html code and safely exiting without screwing your blog up.

So I have finally added a widget that stores all your Faved blogs in one easy location. Plus you can manage it within Blotanical. You can add, sort or remove Faves within your Plot and the changes will be automatically updated on your widget.

fave_blogroll.jpg

Where can you store this gadget?

Almost anywhere. You can place it on your blog (most blog platforms have easy addition links), add it to iGoogle and if you're running Vista it's also possible to add it to your Desktop.

Click on the GET & SHARE tab at the bottom of the widget and you will prompted with a selection of icons to make the transition easy. If you find you run into problems with the blog platform icons then just click the EMBED link and copy and paste the code into your blog sidebar.

Where do I get this gadget?

You will now notice that within your Faved blog selection it will be displayed on the left sidebar. If you're trying to navigate to this page from your Plot then just click the VIEW MORE link under your MY FAVOURITE BLOGS.

What are the benefits of having this gadget?

  1. Easily update-able - you can manage all your favourite blogs within one location without messing around with html each time you want to include a new blog
  2. Each link counts - a click to each of the blogs displayed automatically scores them a visit for Blotanical rankings meaning that you are helping to promote their blog as well.
  3. Blogs still get link love - providing your publishing platform doesn't exclude Flash links (and most don't) then the link love that was being sent from your traditional blogroll will still be passed on.
  4. Identify their place in the world - each blog displays their location's flag without taking up too much space on your blog. It can help others easily find other blogs that might be near them.
  5. Compact size - the benefit of this widget is that regardless of whether you have 3 faved blogs or 100 it will still only take up the same amount of size on your blog. This allows you to still promote all your faves and have room for other items.

A Blotanical Case Study: Chey

Chey, I hope you don't mind me using you as a case study for how to benefit from Blotanical but what better example is there of what can be achieved in a very short space of time.

If you look down the list of the 100 Newest Blogs you will notice that a week ago (8 April 08), Chey's a maritime gardener was added to the site. A week before that Chey became a Member and then later added her blog.

So, in two weeks this is what Chey has accomplished;

  1. #46 ranked member - already achieving Patron status.

  2. Her blog is listed as #100 most Faved blog

  3. It is also pegging #9 Most Visited blog

  4. And she's dished off 73 messages to other Blotanists

How did she do this? Well...I noticed Chey when she turned up on the first page of the Most Active Users (she's currently #7 as I write this). A day or two later she had earned enough points to hit the front page and the rest - it appears - is history.

Now, while this is not everyone's cup of tea, and I'm not going to presume that it is, Chey's efforts have highlighted that it is possible to utilise Blotanical as a vehicle for getting some more exposure - and hopefully traffic - for your blog.

Kudos Chey ... and I hope to continue seeing more of you and your blog.

BTW - here's a shout-out to a few others I've noticed that maybe were hidden before: Sylvia - our gun non-blogging Member, Rachel @ inBloom, Cinj and Esther (who's been here only 2 weeks longer than Chey and possibly achieved twice as much - way to go!).

Ice-Cream Flavoured Picks

Oh...you people are just spoilt with choices! As if it wasn't hard enough trying to pick the best posts from 1 list, now you could have up to 4 to work with. But look on the bright-side - you shouldn't run out of things to read.

One of the things I enjoy the most about creating Blotanical, this ever-evolving garden in cyberspace, is the ability to offer members more and more options. It's kind of like icecream. If we all enjoyed vanilla, and only ever ate vanilla, Baskin & Robbins would have to come up with a new slogan. Fortunately, while most of us will happily eat vanilla the taste buds really get cranking when they're introduced to pistachio, or boysenberry or...heaven forbid!...tangello sorbet.

So, I'm hoping that your Pick-ing juices will moisten your appetite for more - and hopefully in a flavour that you enjoy. Let me introduce you to the range;

The Current List - (Vanilla)

Perhaps this flavour will stay on the shelves, at least for the time being. It still picks up every feed that owners are willing to share and sorts them into some semblance of order - yet not always the way we like it. As more and more blogs join the community, the feeds will become so top heavy that eventually this flavour will have to be removed, or at least repackaged.

Maybe we'll start seeing Classic Vanilla, or even French Vanilla (you could add your country's name in front) if you really wanted. Who knows! The icecream vendor is always open to new ideas.

Posts from New Garden Blogs - (Tutti-Frutti)

Ah, yes! These are the new kids on the block. Full of vim and vigour and eager to be discovered. This list picks up feeds from the 200 newest blogs on Blotanical according to the date they were added. You can Pick them just like any other post or start to discover the upcoming stars in the Blotanical family.

Note to New Bloggers: At the rate blogs are being added you won't have long to stay in this set so make the most of the opportunity and grab it with both hands.

Posts from the Most Faved Blogs - (Spearmint-Choc)

Apparently, Spearmint-Choc is the most requested icecream flavour the world over. Why? I'm not sure. It's certainly not mine. I'm an adventurous type that loves to try anything new and daring.

However, these blogs are supposedly the ones with the runs on the board. They've been faved by you since the beginning of Blotanical and now provide the Top 200 in an easy to read list. This may or may not be your preferred ice-cream flavour but it certainly is interesting to see what everyone else is eating.

Posts from Your Faved Blogs - ([Your Favourite Flavour Goes Here])

Imagine you're in a kitchen and the mother-of-all ice-cream makers awaits. Every available ingredient is at your fingertips eager to be a component in your masterpiece. Some summer fruits? A hint of spice? Some tangy citrus? It's all up to you. This is YOUR mixing bowl.

If you don't have any Faved blogs yet then go out and grab some. If you need more points to get more Faves, go and do that too. Then come back, wait for the mixer to finish and scoop a gigantuan dollop into your wafer cone and enjoy the rest of the day. Come back tomorrow and while it may look the same you'll get a whole new set of taste sensations.

Enjoy!

The Purpose of Points

Much has been said about the controversial Points system here on Blotanical. I even wrote a post that highlighted the differences between those who liked it and those who didn't - which met even more controversy and criticism.

So let me be really frank - the Points system is here to stay. Permit me to explain the reasons behind this system and why it is essential for Blotanical.

Blotanical is a Tool

In many ways Blotanical is very similar to Google or any other search engine. For example, try typing the phrase 'Garden Blogs' into your search engine of choice and you will notice a list of more than 100 million results - depending on the SE. Now every body knows that most people using these SE's will predominantly only view the first 10. Some may flip over to the next 10 and an even smaller majority may venture past that point.

It becomes almost impossible to get into the first 10 results and remains hard for the first 20 - 50. So how does your garden blog get found in that list of 100 million + results? Well, if you're not in the top 30 results then having someone stumble upon your blog is less likely than winning the Lottery.

My purpose in creating Blotanical is making as many ways as possible for users to find great garden blogs. So, I have tried to give every blogger as many opportunities to promote their blog as possible - and will continue to do so as this site grows.

The purpose for most Blotanists using Blotanical is to get their blog in front of other readers. And who can blame them? I've heard many people say they don't care if nobody reads their blog they just write for themselves. Great. That is of course if you also enjoy talking to walls and getting no response. But for most of us, we like to know that we're being heard, or at the very least, noticed.

Points help order things

Using quantitative means to measure anything always has its downfalls - and is always hotly debated by those who can only ever view things qualitatively. However, qualitative measurements can never be organised into any semblance of order which makes it inappropriate for a site like Blotanical.

For instance, you may view 'XYZ Garden Blog' as great because it makes you feel good. To someone else, the hot pink colours used give them a migraine and to another the language expressed is far from conservative. Now try and order those things so that you can organise them into a list. Impossible, isn't it? That is until you assign some value to those reasons. Then you can compare values and hopefully produce a list of something that can be somehow meaningful.

The point of having Points is to somehow manage this vast array of blogs vying for attention. This is why I have produced so many different ways to try and help gauge people's varying opinions and reward those who are successful in some particular area.

As an example, those who are great communicators will probably do best in the Picks area. Those who have helpful and relateable blogs may do better in the Fave section. And those who are friendly and willing to network will do well in the Most Active Users section.

The New and Improved Most Active Users section

Which brings us to the new and improved Most Active Users section. Firstly, let me state that this is still in beta mode and hasn't been finished yet. I will explain what is still coming after explaining the reasons behind it.

The Popular Users list has been a stalwart from the beginning of Blotanical but it's had two major flaws that needed to be rectified. Firstly, those that were on the scene early were able to quickly move up the levels and have now carved an almost unassailable position. Those starting today are then bewildered by the mammoth task of moving ahead and may write it off as an impossible mission.

Second, those who have made the top 1-2 pages are feeling somewhat guilty for their lofty achievements and have become the scorn of some less tolerant bloggers. I'm not sure why this happened for I'm of the opinion that if you work hard to achieve something then you should also enjoy the rewards of that effort. Apparently, this isn't a commonly held value.

So, to make it a little fairer and also to offer anyone the opportunity, no matter when they join Blotanical, I have improved this list. From now on you can scale the Most Active Users list based on what you're doing over the next 24 hours. Everyone has the same opportunity and it updates on a rotating 24 hour period.

What happens to rewarding Guru's and other high levels

Never fear, we shall continue to work on ways to reward those who have been contributing so wonderfully to Blotanical's success. If you have been working hard to reach the top echelon's then we will still offer ways to recognise your effort and are very keen to hear suggestions for how this might occur.

The plan for the Most Active Users list will incorporate five different lists, apart from the new one, which cater for each of the different levels. Therefore, there will be a list for the Most Active 'Blotanist' level, one for the 'Patron' level and so on. Each of these will have the ability to be viewed by either Most Points earned and also Most Active Points earned. Those who plan to camp at a certain level i.e. earn 499 points to remain at the top of the 'Blotanist' level will eventually be regulated.

In Conclusion

The Points system is the way to promote those blogs, bloggers and members who are actively taking part in Blotanical. If you plan to leave your blog here just as a directory then you are most welcome to do so. But, please understand that it may not get much attention as it will most likely be relegated to the bottom of many of the lists.

Points aim to reward those who are active. Those who put in the effort should be justly rewarded for it.

The Bug is Fixed

My apologies for teasing you like this - offering a new feature and then holding you at bay because of a silly bug. However, thanks to Nancy Bond and Susan for quickly pointing out the problem, the bug has now been fixed.

If you still find errors or have suggestions for improvement please comment here.

Finding Blotanists with similar gardening experience

It's time to unveil a new feature that has been a dream of mine since the commencement of Blotanical. It's partly been available to you ever since this site began, but its usefulness has been somewhat limited.

I'm talking, of course, about the Experience tab that you find in your Plot. Up until now it's been nice to fill in the dots but hard to find others who may have similar gardening experience to you.

Well, this has all changed with the advent of this new feature - the ability to find others all over the world that share similar styles of gardening. It will become a powerful tool for you in making friendships with bloggers and gardeners who, for example, may have similar skills in Container Gardening as you. They may even have more ability than you in this area and could become a very practical font of knowledge if you want to further your skills.

I'm very excited about the possibilities and how links and networks may be further enhanced through this feature. I'm hoping that you will embrace it and find it equally useful in making new Blotanical friends.

So, how does it work?

You will notice that the Experience section has had a little facelift with easier to view results and a few new buttons;

exp_user.jpg

While in your own Plot you will still be able to click the Edit button and alter your selections. Alongside each area of expertise you will notice a possible 3 new buttons. Some will only show 2 buttons depending on your choices and this will become clearer as I explain it.

exp_detail.jpg

  • Person icon: - Click on this icon and your results will be filtered to those who share a Similar experience level to you.
  • Down arrow: - This will filter Blotanists who have Less experience than you in this area; and
  • Up Arrow: - This will filter Blotanists who have More experience than you in this area.

Obviously, if you have selected the Top Level of experience then the UP arrow won't be displayed and the opposite occurs if you've chosen the Base Level of experience.

Clicking one of these buttons will take you to the world map with flower icons pointing out positions of Blotanists who fit your selection criteria. At this point it may be worth reviewing How to use the Maps before continuing.

Once you click on an icon (* Red Gerbera for bloggers; * Blue Gerbera for Members) you will be provided with a link for the location of that Blotanist.

exp_map.jpg

Click the link and you will be displayed a list of all relevant Blotanists in that location fitting your selection criteria. In this case there is just one and they are a Member.

exp_memb.jpg

Finally, click on the OWNER'S PLOT button and you will be taken to their Plot where you can leave them a message, read about them, view their blog (if they have one) or Fave them. Hopefully you will find this a great tool in making heaps of new online gardening friends.
