Blogroll your Faves
One of the features that was requested in the early days of Blotanical was a widget to handle member's blogrolls. It made sense because most members only faved the blogs that they would read or point others to anyway.
Running blogs for nearly three years now, I know what a strain it can be to keep your blogroll up to date. You make some new friends and you want to promote them in your sidebar but then it means getting messy with html code and safely exiting without screwing your blog up.
So I have finally added a widget that stores all your Faved blogs in one easy location. Plus you can manage it within Blotanical. You can add, sort or remove Faves within your Plot and the changes will be automatically updated on your widget.

Where can you store this gadget?
Almost anywhere. You can place it on your blog (most blog platforms have easy addition links), add it to iGoogle and if you're running Vista it's also possible to add it to your Desktop.
Click on the GET & SHARE tab at the bottom of the widget and you will prompted with a selection of icons to make the transition easy. If you find you run into problems with the blog platform icons then just click the EMBED link and copy and paste the code into your blog sidebar.
Where do I get this gadget?
You will now notice that within your Faved blog selection it will be displayed on the left sidebar. If you're trying to navigate to this page from your Plot then just click the VIEW MORE link under your MY FAVOURITE BLOGS.
What are the benefits of having this gadget?
- Easily update-able - you can manage all your favourite blogs within one location without messing around with html each time you want to include a new blog
- Each link counts - a click to each of the blogs displayed automatically scores them a visit for Blotanical rankings meaning that you are helping to promote their blog as well.
- Blogs still get link love - providing your publishing platform doesn't exclude Flash links (and most don't) then the link love that was being sent from your traditional blogroll will still be passed on.
- Identify their place in the world - each blog displays their location's flag without taking up too much space on your blog. It can help others easily find other blogs that might be near them.
- Compact size - the benefit of this widget is that regardless of whether you have 3 faved blogs or 100 it will still only take up the same amount of size on your blog. This allows you to still promote all your faves and have room for other items.

Stuart...have I mentioned that you're a genius? Is this what you DO for a living? I'm awestruck, really I am. This is a wonderful addition, but then so is each and every thing you've rolled out in the past week or two. More tips of the ol' garden hat to you, and many thanks for all you do.

I SOOOOO wish it was what I did for a living jodi. I enjoy it so much a I'm glad that the last few additions have all been received so well. I'm still working on the forums - little by little - so they will hopefully rolled out very soon as well.
Cheers for the thanks. I am grateful for the appreciation.

Thank you for including the flags - I do like to know where people are in the world. I often use the map to find locations.
So even though I don't have a blog to use this on it is going to be useful to me.
Thank you

Stuart, if you ever start to suffer from burn-out, we're going to miss you ...
Sorry to seem dumb, but what's link-love? I hope it's something a respectable site should be aiming for :)

This is great! Now, can I nudge you again about that idea we discussed a while back about having a button we can add to our blog posts so people can Pick our posts directly from our blogs? Nudge, nudge.

WOW, what else can I say. WOW! I love this blogroll and will be adding it right away. I also love the little flags as I'm rather partial to Canadian and British blogs, with the odd Australian one thrown in too! I'll be able to get rid of the old blogrolls that I had.
I'm really looking forward to the forums.
Thanks for everything you do here. You know, pretty soon, you will be able to sell this site and make bags of money!

Dear Stuart
Here's a request - I would like something like this for blogs I visit.
Blogs I visit and 'Favourites' are not necessarily synonimous.

Esther - Really? You visit blogs that you wouldn't link to? How would you differentiate the two? Very interested in this.

Crafty - cheers for the gratitude. Just to keep upfront though, I have no intention of selling Blotanical. I completely love working on this site almost as much as I love gardening - and I'm not about to sell my garden either.
My dream would be to resign from my current job and work on this full-time but that's still a ways off. For the time being, I'm just keen to make this the best gardening site that I can possibly create.
Claire - nudge understood and working on it. A few people have been asking after this and I'm keen to have this option available in the very near future.

Stuart, I love the idea, but am having problems with the widget with my Blogger blog, and had to delete it. It's too wide using the Blogger "add a page element tool," and covers up text in the left margin of my blog posts. Is there any way to make it narrower to fit better on blogger blogs? Or is it just my blog layout? Are other Blogger blogs experiencing this problem? I'm not good with HTML, and didn't see a way to adjust the width of the widget or move it over slightly to the left to prevent it obscuring text in my posts. Maybe it works with other Blogger templates, but it's not properly positioned with my template. I think this is a great new tool, and am disappointed I can't use it, (not to mention that I had deleted my garden blog roll before I realized the problem, and will now have to re-create it.)
I hope this comment doesn't come across as complaining. I love Blotanical, and all the innovative new things you come up with. I can't imagine where you find the time for all you do here, and I'm a very grateful, happy Blotanical member.

Cheers for bringing this up Linda.
I checked your layout and your blog sidebar is very thin (150px wide). This may or may not be something you want to change in the future however, I have made alterations to the widget so that you can now opt to have it created in a differing size.
Let us know how you get on with this.

I figured out how to adjust the sidebar width and reduced the width of the widget thanks to the optional adjustment you provided. With those two tweaks my problem is solved. You rock! Thanks for your help!

Stuart,
Perhaps I use the lists in a different way to others - I like to scan down it quickly to find articles I like the look of. I can cope with the red star but I find the addition of the flags on the new blogs list is putting things out of alignment just a bit too much. How about putting the flags after the Blog name and article title instead - if that's possible? That way you keep both me and Cherry happy?

This is a great idea. Is anybody else having trouble embedding it into Wordpress? The wordpress widget system is kind of stinky, but I can't get this widget to show up after pasting the script into a text widget.
