Why Isn't My Post On The Popular Page?
I've had a few comments lately asking why a member's post isn't showing on the Picks Popular page even though they're showing more Picks than others.
As discussed through recent posts, the Picks feature has been undergoing a major update. The primary reason for the update was to make the system a little more fair for all blogs rather than just the ones who received the most Picks due their popularity status.
The feature has gone through a rigorous algorithmic change to better detect which posts are garnering better quality Picks. This algorithm will be a constant work in progress adding more variables as it aims to keep the list dynamic and fresh and being a level playing field for every blog.
Why are the number of Picks shown?
Obviously the number of Picks is one variable used in the algorithm so it's worthwhile to display. However, as explained, it's not the only variable. The number of Picks really has little bearing on where the Post displays on the list but it does quantify how the Post is going.
If you have any questions on this, please leave a comment below.

Are you still comparing over the last 24 hours, rather than since the post went up?

Yes, it's based on a 48 hour period. Therefore, posts can come and go over time (usually a few days until they lose their freshness).
Some posts may hit the popular page initially then fall off within a few hours only to come back again a few days later. There are many factors at play so the former scenario is possible.

Stuart, I'm having real problems getting used to the kind of adverts being put above my blog.
I took one post down because it was attracting political ones and I like to chose what kind of politics I'm associated with - and now I've got three rows of provocatively posed females flashing on and off.

Thanks for letting me know Esther. I have some control over which ads get shown so I shall look at limiting this somehow. If you can forward me any names of specific advertisers it will make it much easier to control. Cheers.

Following on from Esther. I am a vegetarian, so I keep seeing Chinese ads for cow-killing machines. Yes I know beef has to be slaughtered, but those ads creep me out.

I'd feel the same as Esther and Elephant's Eye, but went to check and my posts got garden furniture, Turf and Tatton Flower Show. That's fine by me. If you can keep them targeted on gardening Stuart I don't think anyone will complain - and you'll probably get a lot more clicks. Off now to click on Tatton ... :)

I've not noticed any ads... I don't think I'm completely out of the loop - I'm just even more immune to advertising than I thought!

You promised - list of 5 latest posts on My plot please, instead of just the one.

The number of picks for a particular blog posting that appear when I click onto the alphabetized icon is always higher than the number of picks for that same posting that appears when I click on the new "mine" icon. Should they not be identical?

Allan - the number of Picks on new "Mine" page is actually the number of Pick-ers rather than the sum of Picks being given. I shall endeavour to make that a little clearer.

Hi Stuart,
I am very confused about this new pick system... I seem to never make the pick page and then one place will say I have a certain number of picks and the new MINE page says much less... I know that few pickers can pick different points for each pick. I see that other bloggers have the same numbers. Besides picks what are the other factors in being chosen for the most picks or highlights and how is this decided? I hope this makes sense... Thanks! Carol

Stuart, I'm still hoping that you will make either the total number of picks (hearts) or the average for each post available on the "mine (new)" page. I consider this useful feedback that I'd like to use in improving my blog. This information disappears from the picks pages as soon as a new post goes up, and we lose access to it. -Jean

Ever since I said that I was a little dissapointed with appearance of the new picks system it does not seem possible for my posts to be picked anymore. Am I being punished for this or is it an issue that is affecting others on Blotanical too?

Rothschild Orchid - no, there are no reprisals on Blotanical against dissenting opinions or views. Everyone is allowed a voice.
I will search out your problem as soon as I'm able.

My last posts are not showing up on the "mine' page and seem never to get picks anymore although my traffic numbers are the same and the the people who usually pick are the same. Is there a problem with the picks that my last posts are not showing up or is a problem with visitors being unable to pick?

Hi Stuart--
I notice that my posts never list any picks, but when I open them, it likes they've got a few picks.
Also, when I go to "my posts" they seem to have stopped being listed sometime last year.
Any ideas?
THanks, and I hope you are enjoying your tour.

Susan, it appears that you've changed your URL at some point from a blogspot address to its own .COM. Unfortunately, it seems that you haven't amended your details for either the new URL or the new RSS URL causing Blotanical to have issues with your posts.
I have now recitfied this for you but in future, if you change your blog address, you may want to let Blotanical know with your Plot settings.
